Thursday, 24 July 2008

A collaborative workshop in Service-Oriented Applications of Geospatial Information for Education and Research is to be held in Canberra on 24 July 2008. This is an informal, by-invitation, workshop which will bring together experts from the UK, Australia and New Zealand working in two different areas (geospatial information and education) with a view to discussing future directions regarding service-oriented applications of geospatial information in the education and research context, and potential collaborations.

Sections:

  1. The objectives of the meeting
  2. Overview
  3. Attendees who have accepted the invitation
  4. Venue
  5. Meeting Program (Draft Program -)

The objectives of the meeting

  • To provide an outline of the e-Framework infrastructure and current development and activities in the UK, Australia and New Zealand towards the support of education and research using information technology and particularly service oriented approaches
  • To present early work being done in the UK to add a geospatial, standards compliant component to e-Framework
  • To outline current use of geospatial data and service oriented architectures in the education and research context within the geospatial community
  • To discuss future collaborations between the geospatial and education and research groups
  • To identify a possible project to follow on from the initial geospatial work and further strengthen links between the two communities across the three countries

Overview

A number of representatives of the geospatial community will participate with expertise in the areas of geospatial standards, spatial data infrastructures and service oriented architectures, and the application of geospatial information in the education and research context.

Representatives from the education and research community will include those working on the e-Framework infrastructure. The e-Framework for Education and Research is an international initiative with a vision to enable effective use of information and communication technologies to support education, research and administration, particularly focusing on service oriented approaches. The initiative is a partnership between Australia, New Zealand, the UK and the Netherlands, and is supported by government and further education institutions in those countries.
