This topic is raised to develop ideas from e-research factoring document and how they may be useful in the e-research page of the e-Framework website. As such any comments, discussions are welcome.

The e-research factoring document was compared with the contents of the service genre registry found within e-Framework website. The comparison identified few issues which have been highlighted below.

Issues that need some clarification

  • Terminology differences can be found between the two documents. For example the term Terminology Mapping which can be seen under Meta Data Services /Data /Meta Data Capture within eresearch document (refer to the diagram attached), could refer to term Map Terms seen within e-Framework service Genre Registry. The question is do the terms mean the same or are they different?.How can we find or seek clarification?

  • Ambiguity also surrounds the naming of some terms within Service Genre registry. Some terms do not clearly identify whether a new name is provided to a service that previously existed under a different name. For example when I tried to find the meaning of the term Federate, I understood from the simple word document (synonym) that it refers to something that is either joined, united, amalgamated or merged together implying that Federated Search seen within Service Genre list could appear to mean the same as Advanced Search or Boolean Search for some users. How could we ensure that terms such as these refer to a service that is unique or on the other hand find a process in which we could use simple terms instead of new name (fancy) terms.
  • Such difference in names also provide us with an opportunity for creating a list of synonyms of terms.
  • Log and logging do they mean same or are they different? What do we do with terms finishing with "ing"
  • Some terms are found to overlap between two groups or more as identified in eresearch document, what do we do with them? For example terms like manage forums could belong to both organisational group and as well as under course management group, how do we define and group these sorts of terms?
  • Currently terms that are now seen within one Service Genre list could now belong to different domains or groups identified by eresearch document; do we separate this list into their respective groups and into their respective domains? For example terms that relate or belong to course management can be grouped under Learning and Teaching , while terms (such as Meta data) can be grouped under IT or Library and creat new Service Genre registry for each of those under each domain.
